I’m Richard Spencer. I did the level 5 diploma in human resource management in record time. I work in radio at the moment — I run a radio station and have done quite a lot of HR stuff within my role. I’ve always had an interest in it and over the past few years; it’s always been something in the back of my mind that I thought ‘actually, I’m quite fascinated by this profession and the subjects’.
I knew my job was coming to an end this year and I thought ‘now’s the time to do this’. I had a conversation with CIPD about what level to go in at and know where to pitch myself and they advised that, based on my management experiences, level 5 would be a good place to start.

In the old days when you’re at school or college doing exams and you’re writing essays and stuff and it feels like a chore — this wasn’t like that at all. It’s interactive, it makes you think about stuff, it sets your challenges and I felt that was something that just helps you learn and retain the knowledge.
It comes with the ILM Level 5 in leadership management as if it’s buy-one-get-one-free. No one else does that and I thought that, in terms of building my credibility, that’s another thing on my CV that could look good because it puts all the HR theory into the real world. I think that was the clincher for me in the end.
Thanks to Gary and the team and all the Assessors, the day that I got my final pass for the course is also the day I got offered a job. Gary got the whole team ready and waiting for my stuff and as soon as it arrived he got it marked and I got the grades back straightaway. So it was that that really helped get me across the finish line and break the record.
It’s a great course, I enjoyed it, I enjoyed doing it. If you’re stuck, if you’ve got a question, fire off an email and you’ll get a response really quickly. Knowing that support is there makes you feel confident that you can get the work done, as you want to do it. And if you’re gonna do this level 5 course I couldn’t recommend DPG enough.
Once you’ve completed and passed all of your CIPD Level 3 units and received your diploma/certificate, you’ll be ready to take the next steps on your career in human resources.
