DPG Responds to Latest CIPD L&D Survey

Strategic L&D Requires More Effective Evaluation

DPG plc is encouraged by the findings in the CIPD’s annual learning and development survey, which shows that L&D is broadly aligned with business strategy in most organisations. However, the report also shows that hardly any organisations are effectively evaluating their L&D interventions. DPG strongly believes that L&D needs to get better at understanding key commercial drivers so they can demonstrate the impact they make. Failure to do so simply results in L&D professionals being seen as order takers as opposed to strategic business partners.

“With people development budgets under intense scrutiny Learning & Development needs to do much more to demonstrate the commercial impact? they are having.” argues DPG’s Managing Director, Sarah Aubrey.

“We’re encouraged to see that L&D is extremely or broadly aligned with business strategy in 94% of organisations. However, it’s disappointing to learn that just 7% of L&D professionals evaluate the impact of their initiatives. How can L&D be taken seriously and have a seat at the strategic table if they are not demonstrating and proving their ability to drive increased performance and sustainability?

To truly understand the impact of L&D interventions, organisations need to be going much deeper with their evaluation methodology by demonstrating the return on investment and expectations.”

“Having an L&D team who are proficient in the latest methods to shape their interventions, thereby ensuing the right impact is made is vital. They must then be equipped to actively demonstrate their strategic value to the business. The more impact L&D can demonstrate, that is heavily aligned to key commercial drivers, the better. It is only then that L&D receives the strategic gravitas it deserves,” says Sarah.
