Your guide to the CIPD L&D Show 2016
Driving growth through agile learning is the focus of this year’s CIPD Learning and Development Show.
The conference, hosted in partnership with the Open University, will explore the new ways that L&D and HR professionals can meet both the needs of individual learners and organisations. This will be done through 29 sessions, held over the two days. Each session relates to one of five key areas – or streams, as the CIPD is calling them – that the CIPD says are critical to L&D in 2016.
These five streams are:
- Leadership development and coaching. This is about enhancing the capability of leaders and line managers so that they can better influence and increase performance. It includes speakers from Discovery Networks International and Canon UK talking about ‘Developing and Empowering your Line Managers’.
- Digital learning. This stream is about how to embed digital learning and technology in an organisation in order to create a more successful strategy. It will help participants identify the important tools needed in order to make learning more accessible and engaging. It includes the session ‘Learning by Doing: motivating your learners through Gamification’, with speakers from McDonald’s Restaurants and E.ON.
- Science of learning. This stream explores how to approach L&D scientifically in order to improve the effectiveness of learning. It will look at how by knowing and understanding how people learn can improve business performance. One session showcases speakers from Inspired Recovery and Think.Change, talking about ‘Brain-friendly Learning: understanding how people learn to enhance L&D’.
- Learning and talent development. This stream focuses on how to build development strategies that will add value to an organisation. It will also cover how to design effective learning solutions for the workforce. It includes the session ‘Developing the Skills of the Next Generation’, with speakers from D&D London and Fujitsu.
- Organisation development. This fifth stream looks at how to advance organizational learning and align leaders, people and culture through new forms of change. A session with speakers from NHS Employers will talk about ‘Removing Organisational Barriers to Empower your People’.
DPG are running some sessions too. Firstly, there’s the session ‘Using social and collaborative learning to drive innovation and organizational performance’, presented by head of learning solutions Mike Collins. This session focuses on the 5 Ps – Purpose, People, Product, Platform and Pied Piper. Mike wants attendees to leave his event with a strategy of their own on how to use online communities in their organisation.
Mike is also running the IGNITE session ‘Don’t believe the Hype’. This session links to the changing world that we live in and the Gartner Hype Cycle – how this can be applied to organisational and behavioural change.
We all know that change is a constant now and that people approach change differently. Some people are innovators and early adopters, but the vast majority don’t welcome change or handle it well. L&D has a huge challenge on its hands in terms of approaching its trade differently – how to make good use of technology and step back from ‘training’ to a more performance consultancy approach, for example.
How do we push through the trough of disillusionment and up the slope of enlightenment? This is key to success until it becomes ‘just how we do things’. Change doesn’t happen overnight – don’t believe the hype!
